QUESTIONS AND ACTIVITIES
CHAPTER 1
The Young Language Learners
1. Think
back to when you went to school. What do you remember about your first years?
Do you remember the teachers, the teaching, smells, sounds, your physical
surroundings, other pupils, feelings? How do your memories fit in with what has
been said in this chapter about learning in general?
Answer:
I
still remember when I was in the elementary school. I started my first day with
very happy. It was so fabulous. I and my friends were enjoyed the class,
especially when the teacher came in and played us a song, I mean a childhood
song. We sing the song together. The teachers taught us patiently and tell us
everything we need to know at that time. I felt so happy at that time and my friends
were laughed together when the teacher did something funny in front of the
class.
2. Go
back to your own learning days again, this time when you started learning a
foreign language. Was it good or bad experience? Why? Can you draw any
conclusions from it about what you should/should not do in your language
classroom?
Answer:
It
was in the elementary school when I get my first foreign language class. It was
English that I learnt. I felt so shy at that time because I didn’t know how to
speak English. It was because the teacher who taught us was a friendly teacher.
He taught us a simple way to learn English. He also used a simple language to
made us all understood about what he explained in front of the class. The
things that we should did in the language classroom at that time were listen
what the teacher explained to us and tried to do the assignments he gave us
every day. But in the same time, our teacher taught us very carefully and
patiently. They gave us everything we needed when we were in the first foreign
language class, in the English class.

Class Management And
Atmosphere
1. Think
back to when you went to school and try to think about the teachers you liked
best. Why did you like them? Try to make two lists under the headings Abilities and Attitudes. Do the same with the teachers you didn’t like. If you
are working with others, compare your lists.

2. What
abilities do you have that will help you in your teaching. Can you play a
musical instrument, sing, tell stories, etc.? Is there anything you would like
to be able to do that is not on your list? Can you do anything about it?
Answer:
If I was a teacher, I will
teach my student with a very pleasure way. I can sing a song and I’m good in
it. I will in invite my student to learn in a fun way and invite them to sing a
song with me. As we know that song can stimulate student to learn English well.
It is because, with a song, we can invite student to refresh their mind and
learn happily.
3. Make
a list tasks which pupils can do in your classroom, like changing the calendar.
Answer:
List of activities:
- Greetings
- Make
a morning prayer with my students
- Sing
a song with them
- Tell
them a funny and meaningful story
4. Let’s
say that you have a class of ten-year-old beginners. Which classroom phrases
would you like them to be able to use at the end of the first two weeks? If you
are using a textbook, look at the first lessons there and see what classroom
language you think would be useful for these lessons.
Answer:
If
I have a class of ten-year-old beginners, I would like my pupils to be able at
the usual phrases. I will make them arrange the desk according to what I say.
And I will make them feel comfort with what I’m saying. In the first two weeks,
I predict that they still bored and don’t know how to create a pleasure
situation and they will fill anxious what will happen next.
If
I also use a textbook, I will search a new material which suitable with their
mind and their thinking. I don’t want to make them fill confuse with the
material that I give, but I will make it simple with designing a new material
because they are still a young language learners. A happy study process, can
make them fell comfort and relax to attend the class.
